The speculation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
