A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
